While there have been a number of
different mini-events at the Kent-Delord House Museum over the years, the first 'official'
Battle of Plattsburgh event was held there in 1997. There were only a handful of
people then, about six soldiers from the 15th US Infantry, a blacksmith, couple camp
followers, and a re-enactor doing a surgeon's impression. In 1998, the event tripled in size, with about four Canadian Voltigeurs, some Forsyth's Rifles, Bill Davidson's NY State cannon crew, camp followers, etc. In 1999 the event just about tripled again - a good 75 people - with six (or more) cannon and crews on site. This was also the debut of the bateau "Rooster" which we were able to drag up the shallow Saranac River and put into action with a borrowed bow gun and muskets; this was a good exercise showing the proper use of the bateau as a shallow water boat. Next year it will be fitted with a square-rig sail for lake use. The Battle of Plattsburgh is growing in community spirit.
It's gone A reconstruction of the earthern work Fort Brown on the old
air base; a museum workshop in one of the nearby buildings on the air base, which will
include a boat shop; the building of another or more boats, such as a gig or cutter or
sloop; a huge multi-million-dollar plan to build a reproduction of the 'Saratoga',
Commodore Macdonough's battle ship; a cleaning up of the grave sites on Crab Island and
the old air base. There are a lot of other littlethings being planned; a mock
village of the period; as I said before, the community has rediscovered it's history
and is getting behind this in many ways. |
