The old Railway lift lock at Big Chute, Ontario
This shows Paulene in the canoe at the dock of the Big Chute railway lift lock (#44). In 1976, it was finally decided that a new, enlarged railway lift would be built. The current carriage was opened to the public in 1978, and can carry a boat up to 100 feet (30.48 m) long and 24 feet (7.32 m) beam. It cost $3 million to build. The older one that we used is shown here. An interesting thing about Parks Canada and the operation of any of its locks is that there is a rule regarding canoes is that they had to run you through the system or help you portage around it. We were heavily loaded for our long trip, so an actual portage would have been a pain, for us ourselves or for them helping. The older railway lift is still in place but not used.
